Headshots that actually get callbacks

Casting teams want to see you, not a filter. What to wear, where to shoot and what to avoid.

8 September 2026 · 4 min read

Your headshot is the first thing a casting team sees. Its only job is to look like you on a good day — so that when you walk in, they recognise you.

The basics

  • —One clear close-up (head and shoulders) and one mid-shot (waist up).
  • —Natural, even light. Overcast daylight is ideal.
  • —Plain, uncluttered background.
  • —Minimal makeup and no heavy retouching or beauty filters.

What to wear

Solid colours that suit your skin tone. Avoid big logos, busy prints and pure white or black, which can lose detail. Bring two or three options and change between them.

Expression

Take some neutral shots and some with a natural smile. Think of a specific person you are talking to — it brings life to your eyes.

Update them

Change your headshots when your look changes: a new haircut, a beard, weight change, or every couple of years. An outdated photo wastes everyone's time at the audition.

Put it into practice.
